Abstract: This thesis exploratively examines sexuality in elderly homosexual males. Within the last couple of years, clinical experts and scientist from various parts of the social- and health care sector have been pointing out the importance of more research within a field pertaining to the elderly and sexuality. This is due to: a) the lack of research on the topic, and b) the presence of an aging population. Specifically, the area of older homosexuals has been neglected in an international context and to a very high degree a Danish context. Moreover, it is a topic surrounded by discourses, i.e. the assumption that the elderly do not have a sexuality. This, combined with the author’s personal interest and curiosity to the field, form the point of departure for the examination.

The primary objective is to examine possible understandings of expressions of sexuality within this specific population. Additionally, I aim to examine the possibility of understanding homosexuality as a subject position, and also the values and meaning the individual ascribes this position.

To fit this purpose, I perform qualitative interviews with two older homosexual men. One of these men is in his early eighties and the other is in his mid-seventies.
The theoretical framework for examining the empirical data is partly found within psychoanalytical theory, pertaining to the terms: Genital and infantile sexuality and enigmatic messages. The other part is found within poststructural theory – more specifically positioning theory and theory on values. These frameworks were chosen based on an understanding of sexuality as equally a matter of intrapsychogial and interpsychological processes.

The results show various ways sexuality is expressed in the men. Not only does it surface in the form of sexual encounters, it is also expressed in fantasies, dreams and memories. Furhtermore, it is expressed in social needs, i.e. the need for specific social communities or the need to take care of someone.

Homosexuality can be further described as a subject position. In this understanding, homosexuality is defined by contextually given rights and possibilities of expressing an interest in other men. How securely the positioning takes place varies greatly depending on life experience. I found that each of the men’s specific values were connected to the homosexual position. They work as a social compass, according to which the men position themselves. One man associates freedom and a strong sense of community to the position. These are values to him, and accordingly he positions himself willingly and securely. For the other person, the homosexual position he finds available to him stands in contrast to his personal values. Therefore, it is a somewhat troubled position for him to take.

Overall, this study presents two older homosexual males, who are highly reflected pertaining to their sexuality. Based on their stories of lived life, I argue their sexuality is expressed in numerous ways, some in more subtle ways than others. Also, I argue that how the individual positions himself in the homosexual position depends on personal values, and how these are matched by the social context the position is based in. These are constituted through the social contexts in which the individual has taken part in his lifetime.

It is my hope that this examination inspires interest in others, as to examine the field further.
