 Abstract: This thesis was made in collaboration with the Danish institution Studenterrådgivningen, SR. We wanted to have examined the concept Study Ability and The Study Ability Model. The concept of Study Ability can be defined as by a student ability to study, and is originated from a similar concept: Work Ability. Study Ability is commonly defined by The Study Ability Model which is a model illustrating the influences that can affect Study Ability. These influences are divided in four dimensions that affect students Study Ability. Each dimension has a number of factors included that specifies the influences. This thesis examined on the background of these factors whether The Study Ability Model would be positive contributions to SR’s work with identifying the student’s problems and counseling the students.

In giving background to understanding the different factors in The Study Ability Model, the thesis is draws on knowledge from the concepts of Work Ability, Study Engagement, and knowledge within educational science among others. To examine weather the view of The Study Ability Model about which factors that affects Study Ability was reflected among students, five students was interviewed about their experiences with what affects their Study Ability. One psychologist from FSHS, Finnish Student Health Service, and two psychologists from SR was also interview on their practice with working with students, on their view on the concept of Study Ability and The Study Ability Model. FSHS have used The Study Ability Model in their work for years. The analysis of the interviews found that the students’ descriptions did correspond with the factors influences in The Study Ability Model, but other important factors for Study Ability also came forward in the analysis. The analysis also compared the practice of FSHS and SR, and found both similarities and differences. In the discussion the value of Study Ability concept and selected factors was discussed and evaluated. The practice of FSHS and SR was also evaluated to answer the initial question of whether The Study Ability Model would make a positive contribution to SR’s work.

The thesis concludes that The Study Ability Model both have advantages and disadvantages, but primarily benefits, and therefore that it would be benefitial to introduce it into SR's work. The conclusion also reported that there were some methodological problems in interview method that caused problems in the analysis in terms of comparing answers and get consistent answers from the students. Despite these methodological flaws, it was estimated that these did not have an impact on the thesis final conclusion.
