 Abstract: This thesis examines approaches to child rearing within a Danish context and their relation to the social position of parents.
Four distinct approaches to child rearing are identified, a present versus an absent and a restrictive versus a permissive, by using multiple correspondence analysis, and data material from the Danish Child Development Study. Additionally, a child rearing dimension of authority is identified, though only given a status as a polarizing child rearing aspect, rather than as a specific child rearing approach.
Similarities and contrasts of characteristics of child rearing within the child rearing space of the correspondence analysis are interpreted, with reference to the relational ontology of Pierre Bourdieu, after which significant indicators of parents' social position are included in the analysis.
In addition to the explorative approach of this thesis, there is additionally reference to Annette Lareaus ethnographic study (2003) of families in the United States of America, to which she identifies two distinct child rearing logics of different social classes, where middle-class child rearing stand out by being project-oriented and strategic in its practice. Lareaus concept of child rearing logics is used as a source of inspiration in this study, despite the fact that the Danish welfare society in many respects obviously differs somewhat from that of the liberal U.S.A. In this context, the presence oriented child rearing dimension, which is characterized by presence and conversation as well as several leisure activities, has many similarities with Lareaus notion of concerted cultivation, while the absent child rearing approach, which is characterized by the polarizing properties correspond to her notion of the accomplishment of natural growth.
The second child rearing dimension, to which a dual typology of child rearing also appears, respectively a restrictive and a tolerant one, does not fall within the typology of Lareau, and can be said to a greater extent reflect the child rearing approach found in Nordic countries, even if only representing a small proportion of the population.
Pierre Bourdieu's concepts of cultural and economic capital and habitus are useful as analytical tools when exploring the relationship between child rearing approaches and the social position of parents. Significant differentiations of cultural and economic capital are observed in relation to the child rearing dimension of presence. Here the absent child rearing approach is represented by parents with only limited forms of capital, opposed to the present child rearing approach, which is characterized by a predominance of cultural capital, including the embodied and institutionalized sub forms of cultural capital in addition to economic capital. A pattern of differentiation which appears homologous in the dimension of authority, in which punishment and sanctions are practiced by families with limited resources in opposition to high status families, who tend to refrain from punishment in their child rearing approach.
A supplementary hierarchical cluster analysis also points out that the presence-related child rearing approach is the most predominant in a Danish context (71, 5 pct.), to which there are further three sub patterns of child rearing, two of which are characterized by limited cultural and economic capital. In a welfare-oriented context, this aspect ratio can be explained by virtue of the welfare structures that provide equality of opportunity, such as equal access to education, creating scope for a more homogeneous child rearing landscape, than can be the case in liberal societies.
This thesis calls for further examination of whether high status parents are in fact practicing a deliberate strategy to transfer resources to their offspring as part of the child rearing process.
