 Abstract: In the attempt to describe the consequences of neglect related to children’s self-development and self-sense, children suffering under passive emotional neglect are categorized in various ways. One of the terms used to describe these children is the grownup children – children who “grow up too quickly” and who take too much responsibility in the family, due to parents with weakened resources, often related to mental illness or alcohol problems. From a psychoanalytic developmental perspective and through a theoretical analysis of the terms neglect and childhood, this thesis seeks to analyse the grownup children’s self-development and how this can be seen as inappropriate in their relevant cultural environment. The aim of the study is to get a more nuanced understanding of the children’s development, and by this, be able to target social, pedagogical and psychological support in the most relevant way. Psychoanalytic developmental theory is presented here as the fundamental theoretical background. Key terms such as self-development, potential space, false self, subjectivity and acknowledgement are introduced, and an attempt to link the elaboration of a false self to the grownup children is made explicit. In order to demonstrate a complexity in the aforementioned concepts, a phenomenological perspective on subjectivity, the self and The Other is elaborated. Through a cultural-historical analysis of the grownup children concept, it becomes apparent that it represents a somewhat normative understanding of development, primarily elaborated in current Western societies. The current theoretical assumptions about the children as early grown up will hereby be challenged and suggested that it be replaced by an emphasis on the lacking structure and stability in the neglected children’s familial environment.
