 Abstract: This thesis investigates the ways in which social workers working with marginalized and criminal youths can document the effects of their work in ways that are adapted to the specific practices and inner logics of the work. The project is developed in collaboration with the Centre for Prevention and Counselling (CPC) under the Municipality of Copenhagen’s Social Services Department and is inspired by principles of action research. Taking as a starting point an experiment allowing social institutions to try and develop new forms of documentation, the project aims to assist the CPC in developing methods that will meet the social workers’ wishes and demands.

The thesis is based on one group interview, nine qualitative interviews with leaders and employees from nine different institutions under the CPC, and a workshop inspired by the participatory research workshops known from action research, held with a working group under the CPC. The theoretical perspective combines Jürgen Habermas’ theory of communicative action with Axel Honneth’s theory of recognition. The analysis is divided into three parts.

The first part seeks to describe the motivations behind the social workers’ decision to participate in the experiment to develop new methods of documentation, with a focus in their critique of the methods used until then.

The second part investigates the practices and inner logics that characterise the social work carried out in the nine institutions. Four challenges to the task of documentation are identified: 1) The goals set for the youths’ development are complex and difficult to standardise; 2) The youth must be offered complete anonymity; 3) The documentation should contribute to the workers’ professional development; and 4) The way change is achieved is highly complex and with no simple causalities.

The third part consists in an attempt to meet these challenges and to seek out possible strategies of overcoming them in a way that will satisfy the demands of the social workers and the complexity of their work.

The analysis shows that the social workers are very much driven by a need of recognition as well as a resistance towards forms of documentation that instrumentalise their work and reduce its complexity. It is recommended that qualitative forms of documentation be added to the existing quantitative ones and that more efforts are directed towards documenting the internal processes of the work and not only its results.
