Abstract: The Cold War significantly dominated the latter part of the 20th century, as 9/11 dominated the opening of the 21st century. The post-Cold War period and the post-9/11 period have been existentially challenging times for Americans in particular and for most peoples of the world in general.
Don DeLillo’s novels Underworld and Falling Man are powerful and subtle comments on and suggestions about the human existential condition on each side of 9/11.
This thesis keeps a straight focus on the existential aspects of the human condition by making a Kierkegaardian reading of the novels, although they present a myriad of interesting themes.
DeLillo applies a particular ‘dot theory’ from Underworld as a selfreflexive structure for analysing the narration of the protagonists in both novels. By analysing the individual dots of human stories, DeLillo offers an image for the reader to relate to, potentially to clarify the human existential condition, and make history relatable to the individual.
Initially, the ideas of Kierkegaard will be presented to clarify why he is relevant in relation to DeLillo and to the chosen novels.
Secondly, the defining characteristics of DeLillo as an author will be considered.
Thirdly, a number of different inspirational elements and the contextual circumstances, which instantiated the novels, will be displayed.
Finally, both novels will be analysed through a Kierkegaardian filter, and compared to see if any dots are added to the image of the human existential condition
