Abstract: Background: Quantitative studies concerning adult children of divorce show that divorce can have multiple negative side effects not only throughout the childhood, but also in adult life. More specifically, the studies illustrate that adult divorce children have a higher risk of ending in divorce as well as remaining single throughout their entire adult life. Quantitative studies indicate that this could be due to the fact that adult children of divorce have been found to report less trust in their partner as well as more negative attitudes towards their intimate relationship. Furthermore, the studies illustrate that these negative attitudes relate to a poorer engagement in the relationship as well as a significant decrease in the evaluated relationship quality.
Aim: The aim of this master thesis was to test and refine the results from the previously conducted quantitative studies. In the attempt to do this, the present thesis examined the attitudes of adult children of divorce in regards to relationships, marriage and divorce. In addition, the thesis examined the factors that affect these attitudes. Lastly, the thesis discussed how these attitudes influence behavior.
Method: The master thesis conducted six qualitative interviews on six adult divorced children. Three of these interviews were further analyzed using the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis.
Conclusion: In line with previous studies, the present thesis found that the adult children of divorce mainly had negative attitudes towards marriage and mainly positive attitudes towards divorce. However, the study also found that the adult children of divorced reported ambivilant attitudes towards these subjects. Studies have interestingly found that the adult children of divorce report being influenced by different factors besides that of the divorce. The present study was particularly able to illustrate the different types of role models that, besides the parents of the adult children of divorce, greatly influence their attitudes as well as their personal view of themselves.
