 Abstract: This thesis is based on the writer’s sociological interest in family and consumption, and time spend taking courses under a “Marketing and Management” named “Marketing, globalization and communication”. The connection between these two fields of study, a general interest in consumer culture theory have been developed and a general interest in arguing for the value of bringing a macro sociological perspective in play within the Consumer Culture Theory tradition. From an academically starting point, this thesis is argues by questioning the dominant understanding of tweens as a category, by asking how this category is understood and, whether its categorization is meaningful.
This is done by applying Foucault’s genealogical method of understanding. By using this method, it allows a critical perspective on the dominant understanding. Foucault’s genealogical history seek to deconstruct what is regarded as unified, by tracing the “origins” and question the idea of origins or deeper meanings, within a perspectival enterprise
Using Genealogy as at method, the thesis first seeks, to explain and identity the dominant understanding of tweens, followed by an examination of the attitudes that dominates this understanding.
Tweens is defined in a tension between marketing literature, where tweens is seen as critical super consumers with comprehensive knowledge and a great understanding of consumptions practices, and the “concern industry” who sees tweens as the opposite, and argues for the necessity of shielding this category from marketing, as they argues for consumption as damaging for childhood.
The thesis empirical focus is the larger Danish research concerning tweens, as they represent an understanding of tweens, which incorporate both positions within the tween literature, while at the same time positioning the understanding of tweens within the Danish society and being the baseline for most articles and news feeds on the subject.
After a description of the dominant understanding of tweens and an understanding of the descriptions origin, the thesis then deconstruct elements of this understanding by questioning the tendency to compare the tween category with teenager, the perspective on consumption and the underlying understanding for power within the dominant understanding. An analytical approaches and discussion argues that the elements of the dominant understanding is to isolated to form the basis of an overall understanding of this category and why it seems to make sense in today’s society.
In relation to the critical approach, an alternative perspective on tweens as a category is presented. In this part of the thesis, it’s argued, for the necessity of understanding the category within the family. By placing an understanding of the category within this context, the possibility of relating the tween category with social changes, values and sentiments creates the opportunity of founding a different understanding of tweens.
Within the perspective, the thesis argues, that the dominant understanding of the tween category, doesn’t seems comprehensive enough, to explain why tweens seems to make sense to day.
