 Abstract: The purpose of this thesis is to analyze differences at the highest educational level completed, when the focus is on the effects of foster care versus institutions. To analyze this question, I apply three different models, which have different angles on the highest education completed. The first model looks at the total amount of education in years these children gets, model 2 focuses on whether they finish their education on time, and finally, model 3 looks at the amount of years the children are delayed with the education.
The results from model 1 show that children who have been placed in foster care complete 1.1 more year of education than children who have been placed in institutions, who complete 12.8 years of education.
Model 2 shows that a boy who has been placed in an institution at the age of 11, will have 44 percent chance of completing his education on time. If he instead had been placed in foster care, he would have a 49 percent chance of completing his education on time.
Finally, model 3 shows that children from foster homes are slightly faster at completing their education in comparison to children from institutions. Children from institutions finish their education 2.3 years later than was is expected in the population in comparison to children from foster cares, who finish their education 2.2 years delayed.
Finally, I compare my results to previous studies. I find that there are similarities between Ejrnæs’ analysis and my results. She analyzes if the child is enrolled in an education at the age of 18. She finds that children who have been placed in foster care are more likely to be enrolled in an education at the age of 18 than children from institutions.
I conclude that it seems there is a significant causal difference between children from foster care and institutions. Children from foster care complete more years of education, are more likely to do it in the expected time, and if they are delayed, there are fewer years of delay. However, the results do not conclude that all children in the future should be placed in foster care, as some children will still benefit more greatly from being placed in an institution.
