Ukontrollerede emneord: Efterløn
Abstract: The demographic evolution is evolving in such a way that financing of the public pension system is being put under pressure. The average age is rising and the workforce is not growing along with it. One way to manage the potential financial problem would be if people worked longer. In that way they would contribute to the society for a longer period of time. That is the motivation for the thesis.

The thesis is about “efterløn” – “efterløn” is the Danish term for a kind of voluntary redundancy pay that you are entitled to from the year of 60 if you have paid a fee for a specific number of years. In 2011 the Danish Government issued a reform on the arrangement of “efterløn” focused on postponing the age of withdrawal.

Given that many people consider the age of “efterløn” as the general age to withdraw from the workforce, it seems obvious to start an analysis of what triggers the people to consider withdrawing and especially focus on different socioeconomic scenarios depending on their life-earnings, life savings and their will to trade goods for liberty (as in retirement).

In the thesis the impact of “efterløn” before and after the reform is therefore considered. The goal is to find out how the “efterløn” affects the withdrawal from the workforce. Creating a model with 3 different scenarios does this. Each scenario consider an earnings decile (decile 2, 4 and 10) and for each scenario I test how attractive withdrawal is given there current income and there pension.

Alongside this, a neoclassic approach is being considered as well. Due to the neoclassical theory the effect of “efterløn” before and after the reform is analysed and described.

The conclusion gives strong evidence for the fact that the reform has postponed the age of withdrawal for people in the lowest decile, but it also emphasize that the highest decile is almost unaffected by this kind of political intervention – due to the fact that people with high income is hard to reach with small monetary benefits.
