Abstract: During a time when war, rebellions, terror and murders almost has become a part of their life, the “untrustworthy Palestinian” has become a self-evident truth for Jewish settlers at the West Bank, and “peace” can mean nothing but total separation between the two sides. The last 45 years, with unpredictable violence from both sides, has continually reconstructed fear as motivation for acting, but the two sides have nevertheless been living in close proximity to each other. In Gush Etzion and other settlements, Jews are interacting with their neighbouring Palestinians in an almost paradoxical way: Even when the general opinion is to consider every Palestinian as a potential terrorist, they are, among other things, hiring Palestinians as gardeners and janitors.
Based on a field study in this particular area, this thesis will show and discuss the two apparently conflicting ways the religious settlers act based on fear: the secure approach, where they try to control Palestinians by sets of security codes and precautions, while the other stance ignores the danger and fear, motivated by the desire for living a normal life. Further on, the thesis will discuss the triadic relationship between fear, knowledge and trust on the West Bank, and how this affects what the Jewish settlers think about and interact with their Palestinian neighbours.
As a result, the different perspectives of the Jewish side in this conflict can be seen as three different types of “naboskap” (being part of a neighbourhood): the neighbouring sides seen as two parallel lines, never truly approaching or understanding each other; the pragmatic neighbours, as a way of approaching each other and cooperate on the basis of the limited similarities of the two sides; and sensitive neighbours, defined as those who want live with their Palestinian neighbours in accordance to their Jewish customs: to love your neighbour as yourself.
