Abstract: Over recent decades class voting in Denmark has been in decline. From having one of the highest levels of class voting, the situation in Denmark is now similar to that in other Western-European countries. Working class voters, who used to be very supportive of the left wing, are now in favor of the right-wing. This thesis seeks to explain why blue-collar workers in such great numbers have left the left-wing parties in the period of 1971-2011. Drawing on Cleavage Theory, the question will be examined by analyzing changes of the traditional class-based cleavage. Data from the Danish Election Survey is analyzed using multinomial logistic regression models and descriptive statistics. The thesis uncovers the development through three main findings:

First, changes of demography can only partly explain the electoral change of the working class. There has been a clear decline in the relation between social class and party choice. However, blue-collar workers, poorly educated voters, low income voters and union members still tend to support left-wing parties. Hence, despite being weakened, the traditional pattern of working class voting left-wing still exists.

Second, new politics issues tend to make blue-collar workers vote for right-wing parties. Both historically and currently, working class voters are rightist in new politics issues. In fact, the political attitudes of workers towards new politics have been fairly constant throughout the years. By increasingly voting right-wing, working class voters seems to have brought their electoral choices in line with their new politics attitudes.

Third, old politics issues are affecting the party choice of workers in support of the left-wing parties. Working class voters are leftist in their old politics attitudes, which strengthen their support of left-wing parties. The decline in working class support for left-wing parties can consequently not be explained by changes in old politics.

In conclusion, I argue that class-based divisions stills counts as a source of electoral behavior in Denmark. However, the rise of new parties and party-constellations means that the working class not necessarily finds its preferred mixture of leftist old politics and rightist new politics within the left-wing.
