Abstract: This thesis demonstrates that the observed credit card debt puzzle may partly be caused by a combination of consumer impatience and the existence of inexpensive (in terms of utility) credit. Since this arises under optimality principles, it could indicate that the behaviour observed is optimal and therefore not so puzzling after all.
The theoretical model has been shown to simulate key statistics of the borrow- ing behaviour of the a sample of Danish households to a remarkable extent. The model predicts that agents hold a target level of cash to income. The target level of cash to income is found to be in the order of one months disposable income. The model further predicts that households that borrow using their credit card to simultaneously save around 70 percent of their income.
Additionally, the model is able to match the high cash to income ratios of savers and low cash to income ratios of borrowers in the data, but underestimates the size of cash to income ratio for the puzzle group.
