Abstract: News framing can exert a strong influence on public opinion. Following a media content analysis, this thesis investigates the effects of news framing on support for the Danish “betalingsring” around Copenhagen. In May 2013 11.790 people participated in a survey-experiment regarding their opinions about this proposal. “Betalingsringen” was a political proposal by SF and Socialdemokraterne. In the fall of 2011, it was one of the hottest topics in the Danish media. Although the proposal had both opponents and advocates, the media’s framing was overall negative. In February 2012, after months of heavy debate, the Danish government rolled back their proposal. According to a Danish newspaper, the media had framed “Betalingsringen” to death. This statement is the motivation of this thesis.

How did framing influence the readers and viewers of the news on this specific topic? The survey-experiment clarifies this question. The experimental study showed a significant difference in the level of support for “Be-talingsringen” between respondents who were exposed to a positively valenced news frame, and respondents who were exposed to a negative frame. The study tested the hypothesis that frames influence the importance of certain considerations and that the valence of the news frames directly influences opinion. Negative news frames yielded stronger effects than positive news frames. Moreover, so did frames that contained both positive and negative considerations compared to one-directional frames.

The experiment revealed that framing does not have unconditional ways to influence. Car-owners and people living in Copenhagen were less affected by framing than non-car-owners and people living outside of Copen-hagen. Left-wingers were more affected by positive framing than right-wingers, as well as low political sophis-ticates were less affected by framing in general.

The experiment demonstrates that the approval of “Betalingsringen” is contingent on the media’s coverage of the issue in interaction with individual characteristics. It is interesting that the amount of negative news cover-age in the media was not mirrored in the amount of opponents in the Danish population. Keeping in mind, the government’s decision about the rollback of “Betalingsringen” it seems as if it is not only the public that is influenced by the framing of the media.
