Abstract: Introduction. Many studies have shown that people living with congenital physical disabilities face biological, psychological and social problems due to their disabilities. This is shown to have a negative impact on their sexuality in various ways. The current study applies a phenomenological approach with the aim of understanding the ways in which individuals experience how their physical disability affects their sexuality.
Method. Two respondents (1 male and 1 female) with physical disabilities participated in semi-structured interviews. After each interview the participants responded to questions in the physical disability and sexual and body esteem scale. The Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) through 4 analytical steps was used to analyze the data.
Results. The data demonstrate that both participants consider sexuality to be something special and meaningful. The female respondent reports experiencing a higher awareness of her body due to sexual experience. The male respondent feels normal and unified with the surrounding world because of his sexuality. Social barriers towards disability in the surrounding environment seems to have a negative impact on these people’s sexuality because it restricts their options of finding a romantic or sexual partner and affects negatively the feelings related to having a sexuality.
Discussion. The results suggest that sexuality is of special concern to people living with physical disabilities. Practical barriers and the lack of knowledge and acceptance among families, institutions and schools seem to pose the biggest challenge. Despite the challenges, sexuality is a positive aspect of life that can serve as a power source. For this reason, sexuality should be considered of great importance in the psychological and social work carried out with people with physical disabilities and in educational programs, and should be studied further in its biological, psychological, social and relational meanings and implications.
