Abstract: The relationship between illness, health processes, identity, and literature is the
focus in this project. It combines tools from Literature and Cultural Studies.
In a practical manner it addresses central questions of this investigation from
different theoretical angles, amongst others Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s
phenomenological theory, the hermeneutical Mimesis Theory of Paul Ricoeur,
psychoanalytical works of Judy Gammelgaard and Donald W. Winnicott, and
combines it with the medical sociological research of Aaron Antonovsky, likewise
with concrete perspectives of narrative therapeutic methods developed by
Michael White.
Themes as perception, agency, communication, identity, the quality of human
relationships and of professional care practitioners are questions addressed in the
literary works included as case readings to demonstrate the potentials within the
literary genre in the field of medical/health research. These works include the
radio novel Hyrder (Shepards) by Peter Seeberg, the short story Patienten (The
Patient) likewise by Peter Seeberg, and the autopatography Le Scaphandre et le
papillon (The Butterfly and the Divingbell) by Jean-Dominique Bauby.
The investigation undertaken in the project relates to the current views on
Literature and Medicine as a possibility in practise in Denmark.
