Abstract: Narrative theory is a rather recent therapeutic approach developed in the late 20th century. The overall aim of this thesis is to explore the possibility of integrating an explicit body concept in narrative theory as it is put forward by Michael White. My claim is that the theory lacks a consistent conceptualization of the body.
Through a theoretical investigation of the understanding of the body in narrative theory it is concluded that the body is only superficially conceptualized, however, the existence and importance of the body is often suggested in narrative concepts and practices, particularly in the narrative case literature. Thus a discrepancy between the explicit theorization and the implicit usage of the body is stated.
An exploration of non-dualistic body concepts such as that of the phenomenological and social constructionist perspective constitutes the foundation of a characterization of the implicit understandings of the body in narrative literature. It is concluded that the different implicit understandings of the body draw on incompatible and opposing ideas, resulting in a theoretical inconsistency in the narrative framework. Furthermore, the compatibility of the non-dualistic body concepts with the overall assumptions in narrative theory is discussed. I conclude that these concepts fall short in providing theoretical basis for narrative concepts and practices. In order to solve this problem and also to overcome the supposed inconsistency, I introduce an alternative body concept. Inspired by the scientific foundation of narrative theory in post structuralism and process philosophy I suggest what I name a processual body concept and discuss the implications of integrating the processual body concept with narrative therapy. I argue that such a contribution strengthens the narrative approach theoretically and that it constitutes a meaningful contribution to what can otherwise be characterized as a linguistically dominated approach.
