 Abstract: This Master’s thesis examines if feeling guilt can explain why employees provide unpaid overtime working hours and if the result hereof is gender specific. The applied data used to conduct the empirical analysis is collected by the Danish National research center for Working Environment, and provided by the Danish Data archive.

Before the analyses are conducted, economic and psychological theory of guilt is reviewed. Obstacles and assumptions on econometric methods applied are scrutinized.

The result of the analysis shows a significantly increase in unpaid overtime working hours when respondents are sensitive towards guilt. Extended analyses results show, that a low level of surplus energy, a low degree of influence at the work place, private life activities, in-transparency of job tasks and subjective expectations of performance level particularly triggers guilt.

Interestingly the gender specific analysis shows, that especially males increase their provision of unpaid overtime working hours, due to a high level of guilt regarding prestige variables as work effort and influence at work. Females have a lesser increase of unpaid overtime working hours than males, and show higher sensitivity towards guilt regarding private life activities.
