Abstract: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate whether the ideals inherent in the societal discourses concerning child and parenthood in divorced families correlate with the factors that are significant for the wellbeing of children of divorced parents. Shedding light on this subject starts with an identification of the changes discourses about divorced families in Denmark have undergone in the past 25 years. The investigation of the factors related to the ideals about divorce and its significance for the wellbeing of children from divorced homes is based on longitudinal data produced from 1400 children of divorced families collected in 2007 and 2011, when the children were aged 11 and 15. The examination of discourses about divorced families is founded in classical discourse theory and methodology that, in interaction with theories rooted in the literature concerning divorce, constitutes the framework for the analysis of the factors that are significant for the wellbeing of children from divorced families.

The main conclusion of the thesis is that discourses about the child and parenthood in divorced families have, over the past 25 years, moved towards greater emphasis on a child’s right to two parents. Awareness of the importance of involvement of children and recognition of the child’s perspective in cases that concerns their situation after a family breakdown has also grown. The current dominant discourses establish the ideal that the parents of children involved in a divorce should share the legal responsibility and the responsibility of the everyday care of their common child, with the perspective of the child being the focal point in relation to issues of importance for the child’s life. The factors that discursively are idealized turn out to a large extent to be significant for the wellbeing of children of divorce, but the results are not unambiguous. In general there are far more factors associated with being a child of divorced parents that are significant for the wellbeing of children aged 11 than of children aged 15.

The analysis of this thesis demonstrates that societal discourses concerning the broken family, which establish a high degree of contact and a high degree of involvement of children in decision making as ideals, function as protection factors in relation to the wellbeing of children of divorce. For children aged 11 it is also important to have permanent residence due to the importance for the child of being involved in decision making, but without the responsibility of making the decision regarding degree of contact and related issues. This is not significant for the children aged 15, which have a higher probability of wellbeing if they are involved in all decisions regarding degree of contact and related issues.
