Abstract: This thesis is concerned with understanding and explaining the relationship between the conditions the development in the late modern age creates for the individual and mental health. The development in the late modern age is in this thesis represented by three general tendencies: fragmentation, individualization and reflexivity. The term Mental Health is being examined from three different theoretical perspectives: existentialism, represented by Victor Frankl, medical science, represented by Aaron Antonovsky and developmental psychology, represented by Anthony Giddens. Antonovsky, Frankl and Giddens have been chosen as they each represent a different theoretical perspective but at the same time each has a theory that in some way concerns mental health. The impact fragmentation, individualization and reflexivity have on the conditions for mental health is being discussed from each of the three different theoretical perspectives, and as a supplement to these three theories, empiric surveys have been drawn into the discussion as well. From the discussion it shows that from each of the chosen perspectives it can be concluded that the conditions for mental health in the late modern age seems to be impaired. From the discussion it also shows that none of these three theories seems to fully capture the complexity of the relationship between mental health and the development in the late modern age, and therefore other perspectives is drawn into the discussion as well. The purpose of the thesis is to facilitate a broad discussion of what conditions the development in the late modern age creates for the mental health and how these can be understood. This is the reason that very different theoretical perspectives has been chosen. The purpose of the thesis is not to give a final conclusion on the matter, as this is not possible when you choose theoretical perspectives with very different starting points. The hope for this thesis is that the findings here will be an inspiration in the work in the area of mental health when it comes to prevention and treatment of bad mental health.
