Abstract: Attachment theory describes attachment between the child and the caretaker as extremely important for the child’s continued development of both personality and social ability. Secure attachment has shown empirically to relate to for instance, self reliance and social competence, as well as proper emotion regulation, primarily in handling negative emotions such as anger, aggression and anxiety. Insecure attachment has been found to be a risk factor for development of different forms of psychopathology, for internalized and externalized symptoms as well as dissociative symptoms. This thesis reviews attachment based treatment for children and adolescents (7-18 years old), with different types of psychopathological symptoms and diagnoses. The use of attachment theory in interventions and therapies is explored, as well as the evidence for efficiency of these treatments. The review of the 12 found attachment based methods shows that all of them view the child’s symptoms or diagnosis as completely or partially a result of insecure attachment. Some of the methods focus on exploring the parents’ own attachment patterns and/or attachment relationships in the family, as a path to strengthen the child’s attachment. Some of the methods also focus on improving the availability and sensitivity of the parent in order to stimulate the child’s attachment. Most deviating among the reviewed methods were attachment based methods that used doubtful techniques that were inappropriate for the child’s cognitive levels and forces the child to regress to earlier developmental levels. Effect studies are in several cases non-existing or recently initiated. Two methods show promising results in using attachment theory: Attachment based family therapy (ABFT) displaying good results in treatment of young adults with depression, anxiety and suicidal risk; and mentalization based therapies (MBT-F and MBT-A) through the usage of the mentalization concept in an attachment theoretical context. Effect studies of these methods should be further examined. A continued development and analysis of how treatment methods for children and young adults use attachment theory, as well as their efficiency is necessary, none the less in order to prevent doubtful interventions based on attachment theory.
