 Abstract: The intention of this thesis is to survey the phenomenon of anxiety and its relation to human development. In principle this thesis could also be regarded as an attempt to call attention to some aspects of anxiety which are less known and more constructive than those usually mentioned in connection with the phenomenon of anxiety. The main question in this thesis is; - how can we understand the paradoxical meaning of anxiety, that means how can it both be understood as a hindrance as well as a necessary and natural condition for human development and personal growth.
Anxiety is in present thesis regarded as an utmost complex and diffused phenomenon, which has been of great interest to a broad range of psychological and philosophical theories throughout the times. The two primary theories used in this literature study is the classic psychoanalysis as it is represented by Sigmund Freud as well as the existential philosophy, represented by Søren Kierkegaard. Emphasis is placed on similarities and differences in the understanding of anxiety from these two perspectives.
As a third perspective I will introduce the theory of existential psychology - first of all in order to create a synthesis between the first two mentioned perspectives, and secondly to be able to understand anxiety and its relation to human development from a more current and society related viewpoint.
After concentrating on the theoretical perspectives of anxiety, two minor case studies from my own practice experience will be presented in order to illustrate, how anxiety can take place in “the real life”.
In the discussion at the end of the thesis, I will strive to combine my different theoretical perspectives with my practical experience in the question of how anxiety can be a driving force for daring to comply with ones possibility for freedom and self realization. Diverse existential dilemmas will be discussed, including attachment /separation, individuality/conformity, safety/development and freedom/ responsibility.
Finally, I will discuss my main question in regard to newer psychodynamic development theories. The purpose of this is to try to explain why not every person benefits equally from the driving force of anxiety, and how we as human beings can respond to anxiety in a constructive manner.
