Abstract: In the present thesis, a comparative analysis of Aaron Beck's early model of Cognitive Therapy (CT) and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) was performed in relation to the models' respective conceptualisation of the DMS-IV diagnosis, Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). A systematological approach was adopted in order to examine, compare and discuss the underlying meta-theoretical constructs of the two cognitive models. Epistemological and ontological frameworks were scrutinized emphasising the ontological dualisms of the cognition-affect relation and the mind-body relation. This thesis offers an in-depth comparison and discussion of the above topics in relation to the meta-theoretical assumptions of the original Buddhist mindfulness, which is claimed to be incorporated in the MBCT model. Within the CT perspective a unilateral causal relationship between cognition and affect was discovered. Opposed to this is the MBCT perspective, which in the thesis is shown to claim a causal reciprocity between cognition and affect. It was discovered that both CT and MBCT rely on cognitive constructionism as their epistemological frameworks, as well as materialism and phychicalism as ontological frameworks. It was suggested that the CT perspective might rely on a property dualistic emergentism in order to substantiate the mind-body relation. Furthermore, it was argued that MBCT might rely on a materialistic, monistic token identity theory in order to validate the mind-body relation.
The meta-theoretical assumptions of CT and MBCT were found to be radically different from the meta-theoretical assumptions upon which the original Buddhist mindfulness relies. Facilitated by the comparative discussion the thesis proposes the development of a modern coherent version of cognitive therapy for MDD that manages to fully integrate the models of CT and MCBT.
