 Abstract: Two field trials were carried out in 2007 to study the effect of timing of post-emergence weed harrowing in four early crop growth stages of spring barley. Selectivity and crop recovery were studied within a range of crop soil cover. Selectivity describes weed control relative to crop soil cover and was studied in the presence of naturally occurring weeds in an organic field. Crop recovery describes percentage yield loss relative to crop soil cover and was studied under weed-free conditions in a conventional field. Selectivity was compared at 60% or 80% weed control of Sinapsis arvensis or total weeds and shown to be unaffected by timing. A comparison at 25% crop soil cover showed crop recovery to be unaffected by timing. An effect of timing on yield responses was not found in the presence of weeds. Neither negative yield responses from harrowing nor positive yield responses from weed control were apparent. The results left a weeding window of two weeks in early crop growth stages to carry out weed harrowing.Average yield loss associated with 25% crop soil cover was 4% and weed harrowing would be beneficial in terms of yield, if the controlled weeds would have caused yield losses beyond 4%. A first attempt to analyse and compare combinations of harrowing at multiple growth stages to single harrowing was done. Selectivity of the combinations was not significantly different from single harrowing. One combination of harrowing at three crop growth stages showed lower crop recovery than single harrowing at the two later timings. The reliability of the results is discussed.
