Abstract: User involvement, user-generated content, dialogue, communication and knowledge sharing are all concepts which are currently in focus throughout the museum world. This master thesis takes the output that this leads to a more community focused museum profile. By looking at how it is formulated from above – political-, from below – from the users them self - and from within the museum profession itself the thesis investigates the structure of museum communities using Ferdinand Tönnies “Gesellschaft” and “Gemeinschaft” as well as James S. Colemans and Robert D. Putnams theories on social capital. The main point of this investigation is to look at the structure of the different communities a museum is involved in including new communities through social media and distinguish between new and old communities. The conclusion is that the communities museums traditional are part of are formal communities very much like Tönnies’ ”Gesellschaft”. The new communities are more like Coleman and Putnams network based communities.
